Ka-Deidre Simmons, Women's Basketball

Redshirt sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) continued her torrid run on the offensive end last week, leading the Pirates in scoring twice as SHU earned a split in a pair of BIG EAST road games at Cincinnati and St. John’s.

Against the Bearcats, Simmons matched a season-high with 18 points, just one shy of her career-high total. She also led all players with seven rebounds and dished out three assists to guide The Hall to a 64-56 victory, the second-straight for Seton Hall when traveling to UC.

With the win, the Pirates improved to 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

In a Saturday matinee at the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” Simmons did not shy away from the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, reaching double-figures in scoring for the eighth-straight contest by pouring in 14 points against St. John’s.

Over the two games Simmons fueled the Pirates’ attack, connecting on 9-of-16 field goal attempts (56.2 percent) and leading the team in free-throws made and attempted (12-of-17).

By week’s end, Simmons pushed her scoring average to 11.3 points per game, the second-highest total on the squad. The Newark native has picked up where she left off in a debut campaign that landed her on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2010-11, returning from injury to start every game this season and post team-leading averages in minutes (33.6), assists (3.3) and steals (2.0) per game.

The diminutive point guard has also emerged as a force on the glass, grabbing an average of six rebounds per game over the last five contests. For the season, she currently ranks fourth on the team, hauling in an average of 4.1 boards.

After playing a key role for the Pirates as they took a split form back-to-back conference road tests, Ka-Deidre Simmons is the SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (1/15) for the second time this season.
