PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Jernail Hayes (Newark, Del.) was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week after a strong showing at the Penn State Northeast Challenge last weekend. Hayes is the first Seton Hall runner to earn the honor since the conference began handing out weekly awards last season.
Hayes registered the nation's third fastest time in the 400-meter dash with a 53.35 mark, earning an NCAA provisional time, and a second place finish. She also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay team which ran a 3:39.73, another NCAA provisional time, for second place, ranking the quartet fourth nationally.
Louisville junior D'Ana McCarty was the BIG EAST Female Field Athlete of the Week, while Louisville sophomore Wesley Smith and USF freshman Lindsey Lamar were named BIG EAST Male Field and Track Athletes of the Week, respectively.
The Pirates return to action on January 22 at the Great Dane Invitational.
