Danielle DeStaso, Softball
Sophomore Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) had a record-setting opening weekend for the Seton Hall University softball team as the Pirates opened the season with a 2-2 record at the Hampton Inn Campbell Stampede Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C.
The sophomore pitcher/designated hitter torched the opposition all weekend, finishing the four-game tournament by hitting .692 (9-for-13) with eight RBI, three doubles, two home runs and three runs scored. With five extra base hits, she slugged 1.385 and posted a .714 on base percentage.
The most dominating performance of the weekend came in the Pirates' 12-5 season-opening win over St. Bonaventure where DeStaso set a pair of Seton Hall single-game offensive records.
She went 5-for-5 at the plate, driving in seven runs with three extra base hits, two doubles and a home run. Her five hits set a new SHU single-game record, surpassing the old mark of four hits which was achieved on 12 occasions, most recently by Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) against Saint Peter's last season. DeStaso's seven RBI were also a new SHU single-game record, breaking the old standard of six, which had been done five times before, but not since 2009.
Making her game against St. Bonaventure even more impressive, DeStaso started at pitcher and faced all but three batters, striking out 10 on her way to picking up her first win of the season.
DeStaso also turned in a strong showing in Seton Hall's 7-6 eight-inning loss to Campbell in its tournament finale. She was 3-for-4 with her second home run of the weekend.
For her efforts, DeStaso was named to the BIG EAST Conference Softball Weekly Honor Roll for the second time in her career.
