Chloe Sher, Women's Tennis
The Seton Hall tennis team returned to Annapolis, Md. for the second time in 2012-13 last weekend (2/23-2/24), picking up its first dual match victory of the season with a win over Towson before falling to hosts Navy in a hard-fought duel.
Playing from the top slot in both singles and doubles, junior Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) compiled an impressive weekend résumé, emerging from the two matches with a perfect 4-0 combined record.
Against the Tigers, Sher dropped only one game in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 showing against Ayana Dow, picking up one of five singles point for the Pirates in the match. The following afternoon, she bested Navy's Emani Decquir in a three-set battle, helping ignite an SHU rally that set the stage for the match's thrilling conclusion.
With her performances, Sher increased her team-high totals to 14 combined victories and five dual match wins. The Hong Kong native entered the season coming off back-to-back years with 20 combined wins, and is now in sole possession of seventh place on the school's all-time list with 54.
Sher also teamed with classmate and longtime partner Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) to spearhead an unbeaten weekend for the Pirates in doubles competition.
In the opener against Towson, the two juniors helped Seton Hall earn the doubles point for the first time this season as they overpowered a team of Dow and Ariel Burke, 8-3. Sher and Portela needed just nine games to dispatch the Midshipmen's #1 team of Decquir and Sam Droop, closing the weekend with a convincing 8-1 victory as the Pirates took the doubles point for the second straight day.
During an unprecedented run of 11 consecutive wins last spring, Sher and Portela climbed to the top of the ranks as the all-time winningest pair in school history. This season, they are again tops on the squad with 12 combined victories and have come out on top in five of their seven dual match appearances.
The stellar two-day was a second highly successful stint at the U.S. Naval Academy for Sher in 2012-13. When the Pirates traveled there in late September for the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational, she strung together three-straight wins to advance to the A flight singles final and combined with Portela to capture the A flight doubles championship.
For helping the Pirates earn their first victory of the season and returning home from Annapolis with wins in each of her four matches, Sher picks up her first SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week Award of the year.
