SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (March 12, 2013)
Yasmin Harrell, Softball
In a busy five-game week for the Pirates on the softball field, freshman Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) recorded multiple hits in four contests to help guide SHU to a 4-1 record that included a victory at Maryland as well as wins over Coppin State, Princeton and George Washington.
Over the five-game stretch, Harrell hit at a blistering .600 clip (9-for-15), scored three runs and drove in one more. On the basepaths, the versatile utility player nabbed four more bases, increasing her team-leading total to eight for the season. For her play, she was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in her young career.
Harrell's standout performance came against Princeton in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader. The Hall fell behind 3-0 but battled back by hanging three on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The rally started with back-to-back singles from Harrell and senior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.). Freshman Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) stepped up later in the inning a deposited a shot over the fence in left-center, knotting the score. The following inning, Harrell delivered the game-winning run with a single back through the middle, giving the Pirates what was a third consecutive win. For the game, the freshman was a perfect 3-for-3 and added two steals to the run scored and decisive RBI.
16 games into the season, Harrell leads the squad and sits third in the BIG EAST in stolen bases. Her 11 runs scored are also a team-high and she ranks second on the team in batting average, hits and walks.
This is the first time that Harrell has been selected as SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week.
