SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (March 26, 2013)
Jon Prosinski, Baseball
On the road and facing the 15th-ranked team in the nation in what was the first foray into conference play for both squads this season, senior ace Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) took the ball for the Pirates and delivered seven innings of three-run ball to help lift SHU to a 4-3 victory over Notre Dame in the series opener.
Prosinski stifled a potent ND offense for much of his time on the hill, scattering seven hits while striking out five without a single walk. A three-run fifth inning for the Fighting Irish was the only blemish on the veteran righty’s record for the night, allowing the Pirates to hold on after jumping out to an early advantage with four runs in the first three frames.
The victory was the team-leading third of the year for Prosinski who also ranks tops on the squad in starts (6), innings pitched (39.0), strikeouts (31) and is the only Pirate to a record a complete game to this point in the season. The Skillman native has 139 at-bats against, 60 more than the second-ranked member of the staff, but sits third on the team overall by allowing a .216 batting average to opposing hitters.
With three wins so far in 2013, Prosinski now has 22 for his career which ties him for seventh all-time in program history, one which dates back over a century. Also by logging seven innings against Notre Dame, he became just the third Pirate to surpass the 300 career innings plateau and is now just 15 innings shy of matching the school record currently held by B.J. Benik ’01.
His next start will be his 49th in a SHU uniform, tying him for first in school history with former BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding player Joe DiRocco ’11.
For his performance, Prosinski takes home the SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week Award for the first time this season.
