Jon Prosinski, Baseball

When the spectacular becomes routine, sometimes it’s hard to step back and appreciate it. Senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) has been so relentlessly consistent for the Pirates throughout his career that when he turned in what may have been his best performance in a SHU uniform at Villanova last week, at first glance it seemed like nothing more than another Friday.

Prosinski took the ball in the first game of the series as he has so many times, and set the tone for the weekend by striking out a career-high 13 batters in a dominant complete-game shutout victory. The Hall went on to sweep the Wildcats, improving to 26-7 in their last 33 games and 10-5 in conference play.

The veteran right-hander has played a starring role in the team’s success to this point in the season, collecting a team-high seven wins. Prosinski is unbeaten in the last nine times he has taken the hill, eight have which have gone in the win column for the Pirates. The Skillman native leads the squad in nearly every major statistical category, but his brilliance is reflected in the fact that he has allowed less than one base-runner per inning over 80.2 innings pitched through his start against ‘Nova.

After becoming the program’s all-time leader in games started and innings pitched earlier in 2013, he continues to climb his way to the top of several other prominent lists. With his strikeout-filled performance at VU, Prosinski moved into sole possession of second in school history (244), within 13 of current Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli for the all-time mark. The win was also the 26th of his decorated career, matching SHU Hall of Famer and current Associate Head Coach, Phil Cundari, for second-most all-time.

For his performance last week, Prosinski was honored by the conference for the fifth time this season, picking up his first BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Award of the year. A consensus selection for BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, he has also been on the league’s weekly honor roll four times.

Among his collection of weekly accolades are two New Jersey College Baseball Association (NJCBA) Pitcher of the Week awards, and he is now a three-time recipient of the SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week Award thus far in 2013.
