Hoboken, N.J. - The Seton Hall Club Lacrosse team concluded their inaugural season Monday night in a loss to Steven's Institute of Technology, 11-8. The match was the Pirates' closest game to date against a Steven's squad that finished atop the NCLL NY Metro Conference standings.
The Pirates kept pace with the Ducks (4-3) for most of the first half. Steven's jumped to a two goal lead early in the first quarter before freshman Demetri Sopkiw lasered in a shot to put Seton Hall on the board. It was the midfielder's first collegiate goal. Sopkiw would add another tally and, combined with senior Drew Spera's first goal of the night, the Pirates found themselves only down 5-3 heading into the second half.
Seton Hall came out shooting in the third, powered by Sopkiw's third goal of the game. Junior Ian Baker added one to cut the Steven's lead to 6-5. Despite two more goals from Spera, another tally by freshman Colin Speranza and a season-high five assists from freshman Henri Estanbouli, the Ducks pulled away to win the game 11-8. Sophomore Joe Perrotta led the team in ground balls and goalie Kevin Rand had another excellent game in net.
On the season, Drew Spera finished with six goals to claim the team lead. Colin Speranza, Ian Baker and Demetri Sopkiw each netted three a piece while Matt Chapman finished with one, the first in the club's history.
The Pirates (0-3) will begin practicing for the Spring 2013 season this upcoming fall. For more information on joining the team, please follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SetonHallLax) or on Twitter (@SetonHallLax) or e-mail SHU_Lacrosse@yahoo.com.
