Giuseppe Papaccio, Baseball

Seven hits, five runs scored and 11 runs batted-in during a crucial three-game conference series on the road, that’ll get you BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.

That’s exactly what senior shortstop Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) turned in for the Pirates during a sweep of Cincinnati over the weekend, helping SHU extend its winning streak to nine consecutive games.

In an opening game where The Hall would eventually need every run, Papaccio delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing three-RBI double, part of a four RBI day for the Nutley native in a 9-8 extra-inning victory.

In game two, he was at the center of a long-ball barrage for the Pirates, smacking two-run home runs in his first two at-bats to increase his season total to four. Seton Hall would go on to score 14 runs on the day, five of which were either scored or driven in by Papaccio.

In the finale, the veteran shortstop put the Pirates on the board early with a two-RBI double in the first inning, igniting the second 14-run outburst in as many days. Papaccio would go on to finish the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish, knocking in three runs and scoring two more as The Hall completed its second straight road sweep of a BIG EAST opponent.

Between his explosion at Cincinnati and a 3-for-5, two-RBI effort earlier in the week in a victory at Saint Peter’s, Papaccio finished the four-game stretch batting .556 and totaled 13 RBIs, driving in multiple runs each time out. A mainstay in the middle of the order, he leads the Pirates with 13 multiple-RBI games to this point in the season.

In what has been his most complete offensive season in blue & white, Papaccio leads the BIG EAST with 21 doubles and 110 total bases and ranks second with 71 hits. He also stands fourth in batting average (.374), slugging percentage (.579), and runs batted-in (47) and is tied for sixth in the league with 40 runs scored.

His 21 doubles are the seventh-highest total by any Division I player in the nation to this point in the season.

Papaccio joins Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) as Pirates who have earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors in 2013. On April 24, he was named New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Player of the Week and now adds his first SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week award to his collection.
