SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (May 14, 2013)
Brian Gilbert, Baseball
After factoring into the decision in all three games during a sweep of #20 USF last weekend, junior Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
During the first game of Friday’s double-header, Gilbert entered the game in the eighth inning and recorded the final four USF outs to preserve a 3-2 Pirates victory. The right-hander earned the win because Seton Hall drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. In the nightcap, Gilbert pitched a scoreless ninth inning to ensure a 5-4 Seton Hall win for his third save of the season. Finally, he returned the following day to close out USF again and earn his fourth save of the year and second in as many days.
Serving primarily as the Pirates’ closer this season, Gilbert leads the team with 24 appearances. He has fanned 43 batters in 41.2 innings and has limited opposing hitters to a paltry .208 batting average. In addition to his four saves, the righty has picked up four victories and as the BIG EAST leader with 22 games finished, has been an integral part of the team’s success, providing an imposing presence in late-game situations.
This is the first time in 2013 that Gilbert has been named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week.
