SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (May 21, 2013)
Zack Granite, Baseball
The Seton Hall baseball team closed an impressive 2013 regular season in convincing fashion, defeating Michigan in a mid-week showdown and taking two of three from local rival St. John’s to enter the postseason winners of 15 of their last 16 games.
Junior outfielder Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) assumed his normal perch atop the Pirates’ lineup in all four contests, adding seven hits, three runs scored and two runs batted-in over the five-day stretch. For his contributions, he was selected to the final BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season, marking the second time he has been recognized by the conference office in 2013.
In the pivotal matchup with Michigan, Granite notched a single, a stolen base, and scored the final SHU run in a 5-3 victory.
After recording three of the Pirates’ eight hits and driving in a run in the series opener against STJ; the Staten Island native posted another multi-hit day in game 2, his eighth of the season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Also in game 2, Granite helped keep the game scoreless in the top of the first when he gunned out the potential go-ahead run at the plate to end the inning.
In the series-clinching win, Granite knocked another hit, his career-high 68th of the year, which ranks him second on the squad thus far this season.
One of three Pirates to play and start every game in 2013, Granite has also registered career-highs in batting average (.312), runs scored (57), triples (5), RBIs (30), on-base percentage (.402) and stolen bases (34) while serving as the SHU leadoff man.
Granite ranks second in the league in both runs and steals, and his 34 stolen bases are the seventh-highest total in the nation. He enters the postseason just eight runs and seven steals shy of cracking the top-10 in school history in each respective category.
This is the second time this season that Granite has been named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week.
