Seton Hall Athletics Supports The Walk for Team Walker

On Saturday, June 11, members of the Seton Hall Athletics Family participated in the third annual Walk for Team Walker to support the Team Walker Foundation.  Members of the men's and women's basketball teams, as well as Pirate Blue, joined over 500 participants who made the two-mile walk to raise funds for the after-school program that supports youth in the Jersey City area.

"Team Walker is an excellent program that provides so many children opportunities for success in the classroom," said Melanie Calderwood, who coordinates community outreach for Seton Hall athletics.  "Seton Hall is proud to support Team Walker and the work Jerry Walker's foundation does.  The student-athletes enjoy supporting and motivating the students of Team Walker."

Team Walker, founded by former Seton Hall great Jerry Walker, is centered on and dedicated to the youth of Jersey City.  With balloon animals, face painting, trivia games and prizes, the kids who attended The Walk thoroughly enjoyed the day.  Thanks to Team Walker's many sponsors, all of the participants were welcomed with a complimentary t-shirt and an endless amount of food and beverages.  ShopRite, Hudson Bread and Markers Restaurant all donated some of the fantastic food that was available.

The Walk has always been a major fundraiser for Team Walker and this year was no different.  Thousands of dollars were raised for the organization.  The support and contribution of the community combined with the happy walkers made this year's Walk a huge success.

Team Walker is a Jersey City organization founded in 1996 by Jersey city basketball legends Jerry and Jasper Walker.  The organization's mission has been, "To uplift and create positive alternatives for the youth of Jersey City through programs designed to enlighten participants and teach the importance of solid academics, teamwork and sportsmanship."  The Walkers aspire to give Jersey City children the same after school programs that they enjoyed while growing up.  The group's ambition has helped over 1,000 Jersey City children benefit from their involvement with Team Walker and that number continues to grow.  Team Walker is excited to report that groundbreaking for a new Team Walker Community Center will be taking place later this year.
