Baseball's Singer, Golf's Castanet Named 2009-10 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winners

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Baseball's graduate student Matt Singer (Bayonne, N.J.) and golf's senior Ryan Castanet (McDonald, Pa.) have been named winners of the 2009-10 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winners for their respective sports.  The announcement was made by the BIG EAST Conference on Wednesday, June 16.

The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service, are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

In 2010, Singer led the Pirates with 27 appearances and 22 games, ranking him eighth and fifth in the BIG EAST Conference, respectively.  Making all appearances out of the bullpen, he recorded two wins, two saves, 23 strikeouts while walking only five in 32.2 innings of work, and re-wrote the Seton Hall record books by making his 83rd career relief appearance.  In May of 2009, he graduated as a four-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star with a Bachelor's Degree in sport management, and currently finished his first year towards a Master's Degree in College Student Personnel.

Soon to be named to his fourth BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team, Ryan Castanet was a consistent force on the golf course.  Although slowed by an arm injury early in the spring season, he rebounded to play in the season's final three tournaments including his third BIG EAST Championship.  Last fall, Castanet was third on the team with a 75.58 stroke average and shot an impressive 3-over-par at the Navy Classic, his best finish of the year.  This May, he graduated with honors with a degree in History.
