SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Through a variety of efforts, the Seton Hall Department of Athletics and its student-athletes contributed over $12,000 to charity and scholarship funds in the 2008-09 academic year.
The Office of Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes led a pair of initiatives, helping to raise $800 for Strengthen Our Sisters by having different teams compete to see who could gather the most pennies for donation. The funds went to benefit victims of domestic abuse. Additionally, 642 pairs of shoes were collected for Souls 4 Soles, a charity that provides footwear to those in need.
The volleyball program raised $1,338 through the Dig Pink program, donating the money to the Side Out Foundation for breast cancer research. The annual Think Pink game for the women’s basketball team yielded a donation of $4,328 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the WBCA’s Kay Yow Foundation. In the spring, the baseball program raised $3,080 with its Strike Out Cancer games for the American Cancer Society.
The annual Mary Jennings Softball Tournament resulted in a $2,800 contribution to the scholarship fund in the name of the former Seton Hall soccer player who passed away from cancer in 2006.
