Athletics Hosts Welcome Back BBQ

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University Department of Athletics held a Welcome Back Barbecue for Seton Hall's varsity student-athletes at the Ivy Hill Park tennis courts on Monday afternoon.

The event took place just before the SHU men's soccer team hosted Army at Owen T. Carroll Field and served as a fun way to gather all of Seton Hall's varsity student-athletes, coaches and administrators in one place to officially kick off the 2012-13 academic year.

Following remarks from SHU Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Brittany Hammer, SHU's more than 250 student-athletes gathered on Owen T. Carroll field for a group photo that represented every athletic program.

After pictures the athletes made their way back out to Ivy Hill Park for the barbecue and a chance to catch up after a summer away from South Orange. The student-athletes also received their 2012-13 athletic gifts before heading over to watch the men's soccer team pick up a 2-0 win over Army.

"It's really a great way to welcome everyone back and get all the athletes together again before the school year truly gets underway," Hammer said. "We want to encourage all the teams to support one another throughout the year, and this type of event helps to promote that type of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Holding the event before a SHU athletics competition, in this case the men's soccer game, our small event serves as almost a tailgate -- the perfect opportunity to get everyone ready to unite and support SHU."
