Shelbey Manthorpe, Volleyball
Currently sitting with a record of 15-2, Seton Hall is off to its best start ever on the volleyball court. The Pirates have exceled in their first year under the direction of head coach Allison Yaeger, putting together a run that has them atop the BIG EAST and among the top-10 nationally in winning percentage (.882) to this point in the season.
One of the principal reasons for the team's success has been the play of sophomore setter Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.). Last weekend, Manthorpe delivered two characteristically stellar performances, helping SHU earn a split on a road swing that included Georgetown and Villanova and improve to 3-1 in conference play.
In a Friday night showdown in the nation's capital, Shelbey teamed with her sister, Stacey, to guide The Hall to a 3-1 victory over the Hoyas in their first conference road test of the year. The win was the 12th straight for the Pirates, extending the program's longest winning streak since 1994. Both Manthorpes turned in double-doubles on the day, with Shelbey adding 12 kills and a team-high 22 assists. It was the ninth double-double of the season for the standout sophomore setter, and the 25th of her young career.
In a Sunday matinee at Villanova, Manthorpe again filled the stat sheet as SHU dropped a five-set nail-bitter to the Wildcats. Shelbey led the Pirates with a season-high 16 kills and 24 assists. She also chipped in 17 digs, her second-highest total in a match this season, to complete her fourth triple-double of 2012. With the effort, Manthorpe has matched her triple-double output of a year ago and now has eight to her credit for her career. More impressively, no Pirate had ever posted a single triple-double before Shelbey accomplished the feat with 13 kills, 27 assists and 10 digs at USF last season.
For the second consecutive week, Manthorpe's exploits landed her a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. It is the third time the conference has honored her this season, as she was also named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on August 27.
On the heels of two more prolific outings, Shelbey Manthorpe is your SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (10/2).
Manthorpe and her teammates hit the road again this weekend, tackling tough away dates with last year's conference tournament finalists, Louisville and Cincinnati. The Pirates will take on the defending champion Cardinals this Saturday, October 6 before facing the Bearcats on Sunday.
