The Seton Hall Athletics Department began its inaugural "Reading with the Pirates" program Friday at the Briarwood Elementary School in Florham Park, New Jersey. Five Seton Hall student-athletes including softball players Maria DeLuca and Sara Haefeli, volleyball's Alyssa Warren, and men's basketball players Haralds Karlis and Kyle Smyth kicked off the program.
The athletes read various teamwork and sportsmanship oriented story books to the students in small groups, including Family Huddle by Peyton, Eli and Archie Manning, and Winner's Never Quit by Mia Hamm. The elementary school students were able to ask questions directly to the Seton Hall athletes about their experiences as college students and Division I athletes.
At the end of the reading program, Seton Hall bags loaded with goodies were provided to the students participating in the "Reading with the Pirates" program. Included with the various prizes were Seton Hall bookmarks with access codes for two free tickets to a men's and women's home basketball game.
The Pirates hope to engage as many students at as many local elementary schools as possible through the "Reading with the Pirates" program. If you'd like Seton Hall student-athletes to come read at your school, please contact Kelly O'Neil, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions at (973) 275-2233, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
