Ben Mitchell, Men's Swimming & Diving
After starting the 2012-13 season off in record-breaking fashion, sophomore diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) was named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week.
In the first two meets of the season, Mitchell established himself as one of the most prolific divers in Pirates history, setting new standards from both the one-meter and three-meter boards.
Entering the year, Mitchell’s name already sat on the record board in the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium alongside the highest one-meter score in school history (287.25), a mark he set in just his fourth collegiate meet. In a season opening win against Montclair State, the Pennsylvania native dramatically improved the numbers sitting next to his name as he twice bested the previous record.
During his first competitive dive set as a sophomore, Mitchell turned in a score of unrivaled proportions, finishing with a 317.25. Not only did the score automatically qualify him for his second-straight trip to the BIG EAST Championships, but it also exceeded the 300.0 standard needed for a berth to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
In a rare instance where the sequel was better than the original, Mitchell made full use of a second opportunity to dive from the same distance on the night. His effort in the final dive set yielded a score of 322.88, the highest score ever posted by any SHU diver, male or female. Aside from the historic scope of his performance, Mitchell earned first place points in the event to help the Seton Hall men to a 139-95 team victory.
Just two days later, the Pirates traveled to a hostile Coppola Pool in Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on defending MAAC champions Rider. Mitchell again shone as a standout for The Hall as he produced another record-breaking effort; this time from the three-meter board. He finished the night with a final score of 285.45, eclipsing the previous high of 278.77 set by Zach Smith in 2005-06.
This is the first time that Mitchell has been named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in the pool this weekend when they take on Drexel, Lafayette, and hosts Loyola (MD) in a quad-meet in Baltimore, Md. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
