SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Athletics Department continued its "Reading with the Pirates" program last Thursday at Paterson Elementary School #13 in Paterson, N.J. Twelve Seton Hall student-athletes including volleyball players Sam Duncan, Tessa Fournier, Shelbey Manthorpe, Kacey Richards, and women's golfers Hannah Basalone, McKenzie Cutter, Ali Kruse, Samantha Massei, Erin McClure, Megan Tenhundfeld, Haley Van Es and Karlie Zabrosky participated in the program.
The student-athletes read with three different fourth grade classes and answered questions about their experiences as college students and Division I athletes. The purpose of the visit was to emphasis the importance of reading and working together to achieve success.
"I think it's really important for us as student-athletes to give back to the community and be a positive influence," Basalone said. "They loved talking with us, and we loved spending time with them. It made my day to laugh with them and see how a few hours of our time made such a difference."
At the end of the reading program, the student-athletes handed out special Seton Hall bookmarks that can be redeemed for tickets to a men's or women's basketball game.
The Pirates hope to engage as many students at as many local elementary schools as possible through the "Reading with the Pirates" program. If you'd like Seton Hall student-athletes to come read at your school, please contact Roberto.Sasso@shu.edu to arrange a "Reading with the Pirates" session.
