Reading With the Pirates
Dec. 10, 2013
The Seton Hall Athletics Department continued its "Reading with the Pirates" program on Friday at Brooklake Elementary School in Florham Park, N.J. Eight Seton Hall student-athletes including women's soccer players Cathy Chukuka and Sarah Cortes, women's cross country members Amanda Catherall, Amanda Quaglia, and Samantha Young. They were also joined by women's swimmer Katie Adams, men's soccer player Nick Coppola, and baseball's Tom Kelleher.
The student-athletes read with third and fourth graders and answered questions about their experiences as college students and Division I athletes. The purpose of the visit was to emphasize the importance of reading and working together to achieve success.
"It was an honor to give back to the community and work with young children" said Adams. "They see us as role models, so we embrace it and do our best to make a positive influence. They are also so funny to be around; it was a great time."
At the end of the reading program, the student-athletes handed out special Seton Hall bookmarks that can be redeemed for tickets to a men's or women's basketball game.
The Pirates hope to engage as many students at as many local elementary schools as possible through the "Reading with the Pirates" program. If you would like Seton Hall student-athletes to come read at your school, please contact Roberto.Sasso@shu.edu to arrange a "Reading with the Pirates" session.
