SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (December 11, 2012)
Fuquan Edwin, Men’s Basketball
Junior swingman Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) garnered conference-wide recognition for his standout performances in SHU victories against NJIT and Wake Forest, becoming the 19th Pirate to take home BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
Against the Highlanders, Edwin helped the Pirates build a 10-point halftime advantage, scoring 18 of the team’s 31 points in the opening period. The junior had the shooting touch working finishing with 22 points on 8-of-11 from the field while converting on all four of his three-point attempts. Edwin also snatched a team-high 10 rebounds, registering his second double-double of the young season as Seton Hall improved to 5-0 at home in 2012-13 with a 68-59 win.
Facing a tough road test at ACC foe Wake Forest, Edwin helped provide the impetus behind a rousing comeback effort. The Paterson native drained a trey on the game’s opening possession as SHU opened the action with a 9-2 run. After Wake battled back to take a nine-point lead into the break, Seton Hall’s leading scorer helped the Pirates overcome a deficit that was as large as 14 points by scoring 17 of his team-high 24 points in the final 20 minutes.
With The Hall down four, Edwin got to the rim and finished on a layup to pull the Pirates within two at 59-57 with 4:52 remaining. After a Tom Maayan (Galil, Israel) steal and layup on the ensuing possession capped a 20-7 SHU run that evened the score, the teams traded blows down the stretch. Following a made free throw by Gene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) that pulled Seton Hall within one with 34 seconds on the clock, Edwin took full advantage of the opportunity to set up full court pressure.
The 2011-12 national steals leader came from the far side to take away the inbounds pass, opening up Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) for a go ahead slam that put the Pirates on top for good. Edwin went on to sink two clutch shots from the charity stripe as SHU sealed a 71-67 victory.
The third-year forward turned in 24 points, seven rebounds and four steals as Seton Hall captured its first true road win over an ACC team since an 83-65 triumph at NC State on Jan. 25, 2006.
Thus far this season, Edwin leads the team with 19 points and 2.8 steals per contest and 19 total three-pointers made while converting at a team-best 51.4 percent clip from downtown. He also ranks second on the squad in rebounding, grabbing 6.6 per game.
He also recently eclipsed the 800-career points plateau and is on pace to soon become the 40th 1,000-point scorer in Seton Hall’s illustrious history.
