SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (December 25, 2012)
Ka-Deidre Simmons, Women’s Basketball
In a mid-week showdown against the visiting New Orleans Privateers, the Pirates were in control from start to finish, posting an 82-35 victory that was the team's most lopsided win in almost four years.
Redshirt sophomore floor general Ka-Deidre Simmons (Newark, N.J.) was instrumental in the dominant effort, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 from the field and dishing out a career-high 10 assists to record her first double-double in a Seton Hall uniform.
Simmons had set a new career-best with six dimes at Wake Forest just two games earlier, but shattered that mark with seven assists in the first half alone. By day's end, she became the first Seton Hall player to finish with 10 assists in a single game since Jasmine Crew did so in a 77-64 triumph over Drexel on Dec. 12, 2011.
With the ball in her hands, the Newark native helped orchestrate an offensive onslaught that saw SHU finish with season-best numbers in points scored (82), three-point field goals (9) and assists (26). Making the showing more impressive was the precision with which the Pirates operated on the offensive end, as the Simmons-led attack converted on a total of 51.6 percent of all field goal attempts including a gaudy 56.3 percent clip from downtown, both also season-bests.
In a hard-fought game against Memphis, Simmons helped lead a comeback effort that fell just short of erasing a 15-point Tiger lead in the second half. The redshirt sophomore played all 40 minutes in the contest, scoring 15 points, matching a season-high with six rebounds and handing out four assists.
Both the six rebounds and four assists matched team-highs for the game. It was the seventh time this season and the fifth game in a row that Simmons has at least shared the team lead in assists.
For the year, she is now averaging a team-best 3.5 assists per game, the 14th highest total in the BIG EAST.
One year removed from missing the entire season due to injury, the 2010-11 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection hasn't missed a beat, ranking among the conference leaders in free-throw percentage (ninth, 78.3 percent), and returning to log an average of 33.6 minutes per game, a team-high and eighth-most in the league.
For continuing her run of stellar performances, Ka-Deidre Simmons is your final SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week in 2012.
