The Seton Hall University Pep Band is an integral part of the men's and women's basketball games, providing entertainment and spirit. The band plays prior to all home games and during time-outs, leading the students and spirit squads with musical cheers. The pep band is made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. There are no electric instruments, i.e. bass and guitar in the band.
There are no auditions for the pep band. It is open to all students who can play their instrument with at least a third year of high school proficiency and who want to make the season-long commitment. The music is standard marching band charts of medium to advanced levels of difficulty. Students will use University percussion and sousaphones, and some other instruments (i.e. tenor sax, baritone sax, etc.), but it is recommended that students bring their own instruments to play. The University provides sheet music and a uniform.
The pep band rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8PM, beginning on the first Thursday of the first full week of classes. Rehearsals take place in the music department, which is located on the top floor of Corrigan Hall, and there is storage for instruments in the instrumental office. The band rehearses for approximately nine weeks, or until the first men's and women's basketball games begin.
The season runs from November to mid-March, depending on tournaments. The band plays only at home games and does not travel, except for the Men's and Women's BIG EAST Tournaments in March, and additional post-season play, if applicable. A schedule of all games is given out at the end of September. Twenty-nine members of the band are permitted to perform at each home game. Sign-ups for games are held in October for the fall semester games and December for the spring semester games, according to the instrumentation required by the director. If the specific instrumentation is not achieved or an opening becomes available, the director will email the band and the spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Pep band can be taken for 1 credit during any semester. Many students will take it 3 times to give them a full elective course or students who minor in applied instrumental music will take it as their performance ensemble requirement.

Pep Band Scholarship
Sixteen students in the band are recipients of a Pep Band Scholarship. The scholarship is $3,000 per year for 4 years, awarded $1,500 per semester.
Application for the scholarship is made through the Admissions Office and the application form can be found online. The deadline for application is January 15th.
The applications are given to the Director of the Pep Band after the deadline and she will make her choices based on the students playing level and experience, their directors' recommendation and instruments needed for the following year. If 2 or 3 people have applied for the same instrument and their qualifications on paper seem equal, the students will be called for an audition in early February to further help the decision. The admissions office will notify the recipients who have been chosen when the financial aid awards are sent out.
