SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Corey Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) of the Seton Hall baseball team has been named the Valley League Southern Division Pitcher of the Week for the Covington Lumberjacks’.
In the first week of play in the league, Young was one of three pitchers to go 2-0. He allowed no runs on nine hits in 13 innings of work in two starts. He is tied for second in the league with 15 strikeouts and held opponents to a .188 batting average on six singles and three doubles. He had two of the Lumberjacks’ six wins en route to a 6-2 start for the team for the season.
Young had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Pirates, having been named to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Second Team. He was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year for his efforts in the 2-1 victory over then No. 11 Notre Dame where he struck out six and scattered five hits over 9.0 innings of work. Young was named NJCBA Rookie of the Week twice this season. Young has struck out 58 batters in 64.2 innings of work. Young was tied for the lead in wins in the 2006 season and was third on the team in strikeouts with 59.
Seton Hall completed the 2006 season with 17-34 overall record and a 7-20 mark in BIG EAST play.
