AD Newsletter - April 2016

Congratulations to Men's & Women's Hoops

Since our last letter, our men's and women's basketball teams enjoyed a great March that included NCAA Tournament appearances for both programs.

Congratulations to our men's team, which won its first BIG EAST Tournament championship since 1993 and did so in impressive fashion, defeating a pair of top-five nationally ranked teams - Xavier in the semifinals, Villanova in the final - in less than 24 hours! I know that we were all on the edge of our seats as Isaiah Whitehead's shot bounced along the rim in the final seconds! The very next night, alongside 1,400 of our loyal fans, we celebrated with the team as our name was called during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show. Coach Willard, his staff and the student-athletes have a lot to be proud of as they worked so hard all year long, and it paid off in a moment that they will remember forever. BIG EAST Champions.

If you haven't had the chance to check out some of the highlights and stories written about the team's title run, be sure to visit SHUPirates.com - we have links to a ton of video and written content!

Congratulations to our women's team, which finished the season with 23 victories, the third straight 20-win season in as many years for Coach Bozzella and his staff, and once again heard its name called on NCAA Tournament Selection Monday! After graduating so many key student-athletes in 2015, you could argue that making it back to the NCAA Tournament would be a tall task, but this group of student-athletes played with determination and grit and would not be denied. They proved to be one of the elite teams in the nation, and I am so happy that they were able to accomplish their goal.

Our men's & women's basketball teams' success would not be possible without your support. We enjoyed great crowds at Prudential Center and Walsh Gym this past season, and your energy helps our student-athletes thrive. Thank you for all that you do as fans, and we can't wait to see you again in 2016-17!

Be sure to Register for our Hall of Fame Golf Outing & Enshrinement Dinner

Last month, we announced our Hall of Fame Class of 2016, and we are less than 50 days away from our enshrinement ceremony! We will formerly induct Kristen Downing '97, Andre McCloud '86, Father Frank J. McNulty, George Nazario '91, and Thomas Sharkey '54, into the Hall of Fame on Monday, May 23 at our annual Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame Golf Outing and Dinner at the Fairmont Country Club in Chatham, N.J.

Registration for the golf outing and dinner is available online, and there are plenty of ways to get involved with this special day. I hope to see you on the links and at the dinner!

Donor Matching Day Coming April 29

With the calendar turning to April, it's time to turn attention to Pirate Blue's annual Donor Matching Day, which will take place on Friday, April 29! An anonymous donor will match all gifts that we receive in the 24-hour period by 30 percent! In addition, if we receive a gift from a donor in each of our 50 states, another anonymous donor will make a $50,000 gift!

Remember, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund directly supports Seton Hall Athletics and its student-athletes, and days like Donor Matching Day give us the opportunity to further enhance the student-athlete experience. We need your support, so please consider making a gift on Donor Matching Day, or on any day of the year, by visiting PirateBlue.com or by calling 973-275-6447.

Baseball Off to a Great Start

Our baseball team is off to a great start to the 2016 season with a 20-8 record, including reeling off 12 consecutive wins in late March! Pitching has been the key to the success as the team has allowed only 3.4 runs per game. Coach Sheppard and his squad have their sights set on conference play now, which begins this weekend at Creighton.

I highly encourage you to get out to a home game, as well as a softball game at our recently renovated Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. Visit SHUPirates.com to find out when the next game takes place.

Good Luck to Men's & Women's Golf and Women's Tennis

Between now and our next newsletter, three BIG EAST Championships will be decided, and I want to wish our men's & women's golf and women's tennis teams the best of luck as they compete for the crown. Our women's golf team, two-time reigning BIG EAST champions, will be a leading contender for a third straight crown when the team competes at Callawassie Island in Okatie, S.C., April 22-24. Our up-and-coming women's tennis team looks to win its first conference tournament at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C., April 28-May 1. And our men's golf team has been on the rise in the BIG EAST and looks to win its first-ever championship at Callawassie Island April 30-May 3.

Be sure to follow all the coverage on SHUPirates.com and the BIG EAST Digital Network.

Reading with the Pirates Visits Roosevelt Elementary

Lastly, I wanted to share a few pictures from our most recent "Reading with the Pirates" day, which took place on March 18 at the Roosevelt Elementary School in Garfield, N.J. It fills me with pride to see our student-athletes enjoying their experiences with members of the community.
