January, 2015

On Tuesday, one of our own was immortalized in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Craig Biggio, a Seton Hall Pirate from 1985-87 and a Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 1996, enjoyed an illustrious 20-year career with the Houston Astros and was voted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2015 with 82.7 percent of the vote. Please join me in congratulating Craig on this momentous honor!

Craig is the first Seton Hall alumnus to be inducted into a major pro sports hall of fame, and we are all proud of his accomplishments. He is the consummate pro, and he is a role model for all present and future Seton Hall student-athletes. We look forward to supporting Craig at his induction ceremony July 26th in Cooperstown.

Our men's basketball team is back in the national rankings at No. 19 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls after big wins over St. John's and Villanova at sold-out Prudential Center. We've seen incredible performances from numerous players, including our talented freshmen and from junior Sterling Gibbs, who averaged 22.5 points in the two victories to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.

They are now 8-0 at home this season, and a big reason for that has been your support. I encourage you all to keep coming out to Prudential Center to support our Pirates, starting with our Jan. 13 game against Butler. For tickets, be sure to call 973-275-HALL or CLICK HERE.

Our women's basketball team has been so much fun to watch. They rattled off 12 consecutive victories, including two huge home victories over Illinois and nationally ranked Georgia that led to their No. 23 ranking in the Dec. 29 Associated Press poll. It was the first time the team has been ranked since 1995, an incredible accomplishment for this group of talented young women. Tabatha Richardson-Smith has been dominant for the Pirates, earning two BIG EAST Player of the Week awards this season while averaging 17.1 points.

I encourage you all to visit Walsh Gymnasium this season to watch this fast-paced group chase wins in the BIG EAST. We have big games against Xavier, Marquette and DePaul coming up in the next few weeks. For tickets, be sure to call 973-275-HALL or CLICK HERE.

I hope to see many of you for our inaugural “Corks and Forks Fundraiser” on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., presented by Maria Bozzella and Julie Willard. The evening will include a wine tasting and dinner and will feature Coach Willard and Coach Bozzella. The fundraiser is being hosted by Jim and Judy O'Brien at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J., and we hope it will be the start of a great tradition. You can RSVP online or contact Jay Judge at 973-275-2202 or john.judge@shu.edu.

I am excited to say that we are at the finish line of our locker room project that will provide each of our varsity teams their own dedicated space. We have finished the construction, we have branded the spaces with Seton Hall Pirates imagery, and now we're excited to unveil the new locker rooms to our student-athletes in the coming days.

We also continue to make significant progress on our new varsity weight room and video room, which combined with our new locker rooms, will make our facilities one of best in the country and will give our student-athletes incredible resources to succeed.

Pirate Blue supporters have been integral during our facility upgrades, and none of this would be possible without them. If you would like to make a donation towards naming a locker within our new facility, please contact the Pirate Blue office at (973) 275-6447 or email pirateblue@shu.edu.

Last year, we experienced an incredible BIG EAST Tournament run with our men's basketball team, and we hope to do the same this season. All-session tickets to the 2015 BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden are available to season ticket holders and Pirate Blue donors at the Pirate's Club ($100-$249) level and above. For more information, contact our ticket office at (973) 275-HALL or tickets@shu.edu. We hope to see you at The Garden, enjoying the excitement of Seton Hall Basketball and March Madness!
