July 2014Seton Hall Student-Athletes Excel in the Classroom
With the summer session in full swing, I would like to take a brief look back at what was another banner year in terms of student-athlete academic performance at The Hall.
Collectively, our student-athletes raised their cumulative grade point average to 3.29 at the end of the spring 2014 semester, representing the highest mark in school history. This also marked the 12th-consecutive semester in which the cumulative GPA among student-athletes has exceeded that of the general student population.
Nearly 250 student-athletes earned Dean's List recognition over the course of the 2013-14 academic year while continuing to earn a multitude of external accolades as well.
In that light, special recognition is due for Erin McClure of our BIG EAST champion women's golf squad and women's tennis standout Chloe Sher who were recently announced as recipients of the prestigious BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.
Here at Seton Hall, our vision is to provide a truly balanced experience that empowers our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels both on the field and in the workplace.
Through the introduction of the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence and the implementation of the Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders (H.A.L.L.) Program and its various career development-driven initiatives such as our annual Leadership Forum and Alumni Mentoring Program, we have worked to supplement the everyday efforts of our devoted Academic Support Services staff in order to best equip our student-athletes to thrive in the professional world.
Such success is a reflection of the dedication that is a common denominator between our student-athletes and staff and I would like to commend all those involved.
Pride & Excellence Campaign Enters New Phase
Thanks in large part to the generous and continuous support we have received from our donors through the Pride & Excellence Campaign, we have been fortunate enough to enact several large scale changes that have helped reshape the face of Seton Hall Athletics.
Along with the aforementioned Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence, our Center for Sports Medicine also recently underwent multi-million dollar renovations. As we continue working to make Seton Hall a premier destination for student-athletes, work is set to begin on another set of vital projects.
Construction is underway on 12 brand-new varsity locker rooms, creating dedicated spaces for each team for the first time ever. Once completed, all 14 of Seton Hall's varsity programs will have their own rooms, which will be customizable according to each team's specific needs. Situated along a central hall and decorated with Seton Hall branding, the new rooms will feature individual lockers, televisions and coaching areas.
This project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2015 and naming opportunities still remain by contacting Jay Judge in the Pirate Blue office at (973)275-2202 / Jay.Judge@shu.edu .
Also in development is a brand-new performance training center / varsity weight room. This new center is located on the bottom floor of the Richie Regan Athletic Center in what was the former cardio room prior to the opening of the new Fitness Center. This state-of-the-art performance training center and weight room will include branded free weights, platforms, benches, sprint track and cardio equipment while tripling the amount of fitness space currently dedicated specifically to student-athletes.
Additionally, we will create a dedicated video room for use by all of Seton Hall's athletic teams. Built in an amphitheater style, this will provide a space for teams to meet, listen to lectures or watch game film. The room will feature 40 custom leather seats with Pirate athletic branding and a projection system with surround sound. This is truly a promising time to be a Seton Hall Pirate as we aim to build upon our storied tradition. None of these projects would be possible without your support and on behalf of the entire department; I would like to extend our gratitude for your invaluable contributions.
Record Setting Year for Pirate Blue
I am proud to announce that for the third-consecutive year, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund set a fundraising record, generating over $2 million for the Seton Hall University Athletic Department in fiscal year 2014 (July 1-June 30). I am thankful for the generous support of our alumni, parents and friends to reach this new record.
With more projects designed to enhance the student-athlete experience already underway and on the horizon, such as the aforementioned new locker rooms, team video room and a new dedicated varsity weight room, our student-athletes and programs have never been more empowered to become leaders on both the conference and national levels.
All of this is possible because of your remarkable generosity of which we are most grateful.
Seton Hall Athletics Officially Partners with Under Armour
On July 1, the Seton Hall Athletic Department officially joined the exclusive list of Under Armour's collegiate all-sport partners. It would be an understatement to say our coaches, student-athletes and administrators are thrilled become the newest member of Team Under Armour. As we enter the 2014-15 academic year, you will notice an evolving line of Under Armour's Seton Hall athletic gear which will be available in our on-line store and at the university bookstore.
As part of the multi-year partnership, Under Armour will design and supply footwear, apparel and equipment for all 14 varsity athletic programs. The feedback we have already received from our student-athletes who have begun utilizing Under Armour's state-of-the-art technology this summer has been tremendous. This new partnership reinforces our commitment to providing student-athletes with premium resources to excel on and off the field of play.

2014 Hall of Fame Induction Recap
This year's Hall of Fame induction ceremony was an unforgettable event and it was an honor to recognize the 1988-89 men's basketball team that placed Seton Hall University on the national map. It was fitting this year's event was held in front of a packed house of more than 400 SHU faithful in Walsh Gymnasium, on the floor where that team helped create so many lasting memories and a place where they had not come together as a group in more than 25 years.
Nearly the entire team, including the players, coaches, and team managers, was in attendance for the ceremony, and fans enjoyed the chance to meet with the team, reminisce about that special season, and share the memories of the run to the national championship game. A great deal of thanks goes out to Bill Raftery, for doing an outstanding job as the emcee of the event, and to PJ Carlesimo, for delivering a heartfelt acceptance speech on behalf of the team.
The 1988-89 Pirates were remarkable representatives of Seton Hall University and handled themselves with the class of a champion even in defeat. Their success has long been cemented as one of the finest achievements in SHU athletics history and the induction into the Hall of Fame will only serve to strengthen that legacy. Congratulations to the entire Hall of Fame Class of 2014, and thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a special night.

We are excited to welcome Nielsen Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram into the Pirate family to serve as the "Official Car Dealership of Seton Hall Athletics". Through the exclusive multi-year partnership, we will unveil the "Nielsen Auto Courtside Zone" for all home men's basketball games this season, as well as roll out a variety of fan engagement opportunities that range from in-arena signage to exclusive Seton Hall basketball signature events at the East Hanover showroom. Nielsen Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram has developed a remarkable reputation in the region for over four decades by providing exceptional service to its customers, so it is an honor to partner with an industry leader right here in our local community.
Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
Last week, we revealed the 2014-15 men's basketball non-conference schedule. In case you missed it, we are slated to play 12 out-of-league contests, which includes our participation in a competitive field at the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. Six of our non-conference games will be played at home and combined with our BIG EAST schedule we will host 15 regular-season games.
Our home schedule includes a date with Rutgers on Saturday, December 6, so be sure to mark that on your calendars. Also, we will host three NCAA Tournament participants from 2013-14 in George Washington, Mount St. Mary's, and Mercer, which will be the home opener on November 16 at the Prudential Center. Historic Walsh Gymnasium will play host to our contest versus Maine on December 27, a game we all look forward to because of the venue's atmosphere and tradition. It is important to point out some of our major tests will come on the road as we have added Wichita State and Georgia to the lineup.
Season ticket holders will receive more information about paying their season ticket invoice through the online MyPirates Account Manager via email shortly. As always, you will also have the option of enrolling in a monthly payment plan.
